Kuryłowicz / Izdebska

Remembering people. Giving material new life.

A mural dedicated to Leonard Kuryłowicz and Janina “Kaśka” Izdebska is taking shape at the Leonard Kuryłowicz Amphitheatre in Gubin. Jakub Bitka painted it on panels made from recycled drinks-bottle caps.

Reclaimed material carrying local memory.

Plastic from everyday objects takes on a new role: a surface for a story about people who mattered to Gubin. ZERO WASTE meets local memory. This is not only about material — it is also about keeping the legacy of those who shaped the city’s culture present in its public spaces.

Leonard Kuryłowicz

Leonard Kuryłowicz initiated and became the first director of Gubin’s State Music School. The school’s history dates its foundation to 1975. His work is an important part of local music education. School history ↗

The mural unveiling

The mural dedicated to Janina “Kaśka” Izdebska and Leonard Kuryłowicz has now been unveiled at the amphitheatre in Gubin. After more than half a year of preparations, fundraising, permissions and work, the joy of seeing it completed is immense.

We thank the families, loved ones and everyone who came to spend the day with us. We also thank the students and teachers of the music school in Gubin and Janusz Gajda for the beautiful music.

A particularly meaningful moment was a joint performance by a former student of Leonard Kuryłowicz together with today’s students of the school. Moments like this show how much of a person can remain with us.

Our thanks to Jakub Bitka for painting the mural.

The mural was created on panels made from recycled bottle caps, mounted on a steel structure made partly from reclaimed material. Next to it is a plaque with a QR code leading to a film that completes the story.

We thank everyone who helped make it happen: Miasto Gubin, Miejska Biblioteka Publiczna w Gubinie, Ferro Service, PUM Gubin, Damer Kunstschmiede, Ministal, Fantazja Sp. j., CRM Metale, Remigiusz Jurek, Burzany, Ilona Dobiszewska, and all the other people, companies and institutions who contributed to the project. If we have missed anyone, please forgive us — with so many people involved, memory can fail. Thank you to everyone who helped bring this story to completion.

BEHIND THE SCENES / MURAL

How the mural was made

Behind the finished mural are dozens of hours of work, many pairs of hands and an extraordinary amount of commitment. Materials, construction, transport, installation, painting and corrections — every stage required time, skill and people willing to build something together. This film shows part of that journey, from the preparations to the final details. Work like this is never made alone.
